Like many exploring the potential of digital assets and IP, I resonated with the Cool Cats origin story and community (W💙TC).
It inspired me to create this (unofficial) 3D Blue Cat character in an attempt to master two things:
- stylized 2D toon-style shader and toonline rendering techniques for real-time applications.
- VRM, or VTubing avatars, one of the most adopted avatar systems in use in the creator economy (based on Unity's humanoid skeleton standard and the glTF 3D web format).
I used Blender for modeling, blendshapes, UV unwrapping, rigging, weight painting, & animation, Photoshop for texture creation, and Unity for VRM setup (dynamic spring bones, metadata, etc.).
The final asset is entirely "metaverse-ready," aka suitable for multi-platform real-time applications, including facial & body mocap animation, immersive digital experiences, and VTubing. ✨
Created using design reference of "Blue Cat" from Cool Cats (https://coolcats.com/).
Final rigged & animated interactive 3D character (Sketchfab)
360° turnaround in shaded viewport (Blender)
Avatar model multi-platform
Avatar real-time face tracking (Google Meet, in browser)
Wireframe model lined up with orthographic character designs (Blender)
Runtime animation retargeting (Unreal Engine 5)
